A Ratu (judge) catches a spear from the ground at Wanukaka beach, (Sumba, Indonesia). He keeps an eye on the action, to avoid being hit by another one. Pasola is a mounted spear-fighting competition from western Sumba, Indonesia. It is played by two teams, symbolising tribal armies, throwing wooden spears at the opponents while riding a horse to celebrate the rice-planting season. The goal was to spill blood as a way of thanking the ancestors for a successful harvest and ensuring another prosperous rice harvest. Now it is turned into a game and deaths seldom occur. It's celebrated between February and March. The beach event precedes the main one, later in the day, at the Pasola field.
