Prusias ad Hypium, an ancient city located in the Konuralp District of Düzce, first appeared in history as Hypios. It was established on a hill that ran from east to west and ended in a plain. Eventually, it came to be called Kieros.\n\nIn the 2nd century BC, the Bithynians, led by their king Prusias I, captured Kieros from the Mariandyns and Herekleia State. Prusias I improved the city and decorated it with many monuments. He also fortified it and changed its name to Prusias. The city's ancient theater, known locally as the Forty Steps, was built during the Hellenistic Age (300-30 BC) and includes additions from the Roman Period (30 BC-300 AD).

Palmyra, Syria- 28 November 2008: Amphitheatre at Palmyra city, Syrian desert. Dating back to the Neolithic era, the city of Palmyra, was a strategically located oasis first attested in the early second millennium BC as a caravan stop for travelers crossing the Syrian Desert. Mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and the annals of the Assyrian kings, Palmyra was subsequently incorporated into the Seleucid Empire, followed by the Roman Empire which brought it great prosperity. It is saddening that its present Roman ruins, declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site, have come to be endangered in the 21st century by regional military and political strife.Dating back to the Neolithic era, the city of Palmyra, was a strategically located oasis first attested in the early second millennium BC as a caravan stop for travelers crossing the Syrian Desert. This fortress started off as merely a mud-brick fort back in the 11th century, and for the following 500 years, it was destroyed and rebuilt again and again as Mongols, Timur, and Pashtuns invaded the region.\n\nThe fort was completely rebuilt in the 17th century during the Mughal Empire, damaged again afterwards by the Sikhs and the British, and today, it is partially restored.
