Durham Cathedral is a Norman building constructed between 1093 and 1133 in the Romanesque style. It was founded as a monastic cathedral built to house the shrine of St Cuthbert, replacing an earlier church constructed in his honour. Durham’s architectural value lies in the fact that it is the oldest surviving building with a stone vaulted ceiling of such a large scale. This may not seem remarkable today, but developing the know-how to roof large buildings with stone rather than wood shaped the course of European architecture from then on.

The impressive St Mary's Church in Snettisham, Norfolk, Eastern England. Unusual for rural Norfolk, this church has a spire that would not look out of place on a cathedral. The church dates from the 14th century and is in the Decorated Gothic Period style externally, though it has been Victorianised internally and the spire was rebuilt in the 19th century. Snettisham is famous for its ‘hoard’ - Iron Age and Romano-British treasure discovered during the mid-late 20th century.

Cathedral of Sainte-Marie de Bayonne - Gothic style
This church, the largest in Derbyshire, was built in the 14th century and the famous 'crooked spire' was added in about 1362. Although it was at first thought the spire was twisted owing to the lack of skilled craftsmen after the recent Black Death or Bubonic plague, it's now thought the twist is the result of the lead which covers the spire. Sun shining on the south side in the day causes that side to heat up and expand at a faster rate than the north side, leading to unbalanced expansion and contraction.
