Naples, Italy - June 27, 2021: Stone lion statue at the base of the Monument to the Martyrs on Piazza dei Martiri. The four lions represent the Neapolitan patriots who fell during the anti-Bourbon revolutions
The Martyrs' Square (Piazza dei Martiri) is a monument square in Naples, Italy, some five minutes' walk from the Bay of Naples. Originally dedicated to Santa Maria a Cappella, it became a symbol of patriotism in 1861. This 19th century edifice re-purposes the column at its centre, and is surrounded by four lions that represent the anti-Bourbon uprisings of 1799, 1820, 1848 and 1860. The figure on top represents the (Virtue Of The Martyrs). The standing lion featured here commemorates, in particular, the fallen of the successful Garibaldini Revolt of 1860. In translation, the plaque at the base of the column reads: To the glorious memory of Neapolitan citizens who fallen in combat or on the scaffold claimed for the people the freedom to proclaim with solemn and eternal covenant the plebiscite of October twenty-first MDCCCLX (1860) City Hall dedicates (this monument) A plebiscite is a direct vote by all the people, a referendum, and this meaning for the word dates to around the time that this monment was dedicated.
