They occupy the whole centre of County Wicklow and stretch outside its borders into the counties of Dublin, Wexford and Carlow. Where the mountains extend into County Dublin, they are known locally as the Dublin Mountains. The highest peak is Lugnaquilla at 925 metres \nThe mountains are primarily composed of granite surrounded by an envelope of mica-schist and much older rocks such as quartzite. They were pushed up during the Caledonian orogeny at the start of the Devonian period and form part of the Leinster Chain, the largest continuous area of granite in Ireland and Britain. The mountains owe much of their present topography to the effects of the last ice age, which deepened the glens and created corrie and ribbon lakes. Copper and lead have been the main metals mined in the mountains and a brief gold rush occurred in the 18th century. Several major river systems have their source in the mountains, such as the Liffey, Dargle, Slaney and Avoca rivers. Powerscourt Waterfall is the second tallest in Ireland at 121 metres (397 feet). A number of these rivers have been harnessed to create reservoirs for drinking water for Dublin and its surroundings.

Powerscourt Waterfall is located in the beautiful Powerscourt Estate near the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. Ireland’s highest waterfall at 121m, it’s a popular tourist attraction near Enniskerry at only 5km from the main estate.\nPowerscourt Waterfall is a beautiful natural attraction set in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains near the town of Enniskerry. Only 5km from Powerscourt House and Gardens, the waterfall is Ireland’s highest at 121m and has attracted visitors for over 200 years.\n\nDriving from the gate lodge towards the waterfall, visitors are surrounded by beech, oak, larch and pine trees, some of which were planted over 200 years ago. There are giant redwood or sequoia trees, native to California, that were planted at Powerscourt sometime after 1860.\n\nPowerscourt Waterfall, which flows into the Dargle River, is a haven for wildlife. The 7th Viscount Powerscourt established a deer park and in 1858 successfully introduced the Japanese Sika deer to the estate. Birdwatching enthusiasts will be on the lookout for some of the locals, the chaffinch, cuckoo, raven and the willow warbler.\n\nThe waterfall is a favourite destination for family picnics and visitors are also welcome to enjoy a barbecue. There is a vast amount of space to keep children entertained and a playground for younger children at Powerscourt Waterfall, one of County Wicklow’s most beautiful natural attractions.
