Viterbo, Italy, April 04 -- A suggestive view of Piazza del Plebiscito in the historic heart of the medieval city of Viterbo, in central Italy. On the left, the Torre Civica (Civic Tower), the highest medieval tower in the city, built in 1487. The medieval center of Viterbo, the largest in Europe with countless historic buildings, churches and villages, stands on the route of the ancient Via Francigena (French Route) which in medieval times connected the regions of France to Rome, up to the commercial ports of Puglia, in southern Italy, to reach the Holy Land through the Mediterranean. Located about 100 kilometers north of Rome along the current route of the Via Cassia, Viterbo is also known as the city of the Popes, because in the 13th century it was the Papal See for 24 years. Founded in the Etruscan era and recognized as a city with a papal document from the year 852 AD, the entire city is characterized by its stone and tuff constructions, materials abundantly present in this region of central Italy and which have always been used for the construction of houses and churches. The beautiful facade of the Abbey Church of San Pietro in the medieval heart of Assisi in Umbria, central Italy. Built in Romanesque and Gothic style in the 10th century by the Benedictines, the facade was made of red stone from the nearby Monte Subasio. It has a rectangular shape with three entrance portals and three rose windows. The large central portal is surmounted by an arch and a larger rose window. Famous for being the city of San Francesco and Santa Chiara (St Francis and St Clare), Assisi is recognized in the world as a place of spirituality and peace between all peoples and different confessions. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands.
