A portrait of a Laughing Kookaburra looking straight at the camera. The Kookaburra is sitting on a bamboo fence in a backyard in NSW Australia. The Laughing Kookaburra is one of four species of kookaburras and it is mostly found in eastern Australia. It is a member of the kingfisher family and is normally an off-white colour, with brown on its back and wings. It also has a dark brown stripe over its eyes. As their name suggests, Laughing Kookaburras have a loud laugh or call that resembles a human laugh. They are delightful birds and mostly live in trees. They normally eat worms and insects, but sometimes eat larger prey such as frogs and small snakes. They are said to pair for life and both sexes share in raising their offspring.
Kookaburras are terrestrial tree kingfishers native to Australia and New Guinea. They have a loud distinctive call that has become synonomous with Australia.
