Louisville, CO USA . Aug 4, 2022: A Damselfly is seen in close up detail. This image provides a close up look at the common Damselfly. Dragonflies and Damselflies both come from the same order -Odonata but dragonflies come from the suborder Epiprocta and damselflies are from Zygoptera.  Zygoptera is derived from the Ancient Greek word for “equal wing”.

General: The Large Red Damsel is the first sign of spring in much of Europe, where it is a common Species.\nField characters: Tot 33-36mm, Ab.25-30mm, Hw 19-24mm. Somewhat larger and more robust than Enallagma cyathigerum. Both sexes have a red abdomen, with only the last segments largely black.\nHabitat: Wide range of waters, with the highest abundance in well-vegetated, standing water.\nFlight Season: One of the earliest species in Northern Europe. From April to August, most abundant in May and June.\n\nIn the Netherlands this is a common Species in the described Habitats.\nThe Picture is made in my Garden Pond.

Tot 33-37mm, Ab 23-25mm, Hw 29-32mm.\nLarge, broad, club-tailed species, Males often perch on lilypads. They are dark, marked with white highlights on the face, waist and at the tips of the wings and abdomen. This makes identification through binoculars easy.\nBehavior:\nBoth sexes fly actively over open water, frequently resting on floating vegetation (Nuphar, Nymphaea, Potamogeton), where mating may also take place. Male often raises clubbed tail.\nOccurrence:\nOccurrence is scattered and populations are normally rather small. May be abundant locally.\nHabitat:\nPools and lakes with moderate nutrient levels and rich aquatic vegetation.\nFlight Season: \nMid May to early August; most abundant in June.\n\nThis Picture is made in the Wieden (Overijssel, the Netherlands) in mid June of 2023.
