Tours, Indre-et-Loire department, Centre-Val de Loire, France: façade of the Cathedral of Saint Gatianus of Tours - The building, with its 16th-century almost 70 meters high towers, was erected on a slight rise to protect it from the floods of the Loire. Due to the long construction period (completion of the choir in 1260, the nave around 1440), the cathedral represents all stages of the Gothic period up to the late Gothic façade designed by the master builders Jean de Dammartin, Jean Papin and Jean Durand between 1426 and 1547. This applies also to its rich ornamentation, the open arch fields, leaf-decorated lashes and archivolts with bow pendants, pinnacles and niches, a magnificent examples of the Flamboyant style.
