Magpie Mine is near the village of Sheldon and dates back to 1740. It is famous for fatal running battles it had with other mines over resources which led to a 'widows' curse' on the men of Magpie Mine after they were implicated - but cleared - of the deaths of some of their competitors. When the mine was closed in 1958 it was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire. It is a standing old ruin which is free for the public to view and explore.

The story goes that the pirate Klaus Stoertebeker sought refuge in the port of Marienhafe at the end of the 14th century. At that time, fleeing from the Hanseatic League, Denmark and the German Order of Knights, the pirates Klaus Stoertebeker and Goedeke Michel fled with other pirates to Marienhafe, which was located directly on the North Sea after a heavy storm surge.

Castle Rising, Norfolk, England - September 26, 2015: Castle Rising castle keep and bailey on a bright sunny day in early autumn. The castle is one of the best known in England: it dates from the 12th century and is surrounded by huge earthworks. It was owned by Queen Isabella (The She-Wolf of France) and was where she remained under house arrest for her alleged part in the death of her husband, Edward II in 1327: Isabella died at Castle Rising in 1358. At the time she lived there, Castle Rising was extremely luxurious.

St Albans Ye Olde Fighting Cocks allegedly the oldest pub in England. St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, UK. This is the outside of the pub entrance. The original timber-framed structure is visible. It was originally located close to St Albans Cathedral (when it was St Albans Abbey) and was moved to the present site sometime around 1539. The foundations are claimed to be even older, dating from around 793 but this is unconfirmed.
