A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, infraorder Anisoptera. Adult dragonflies are characterized by large, multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, sometimes with coloured patches, and an elongated body.

General: Common by still waters in most of Europe. Easily recognized by its large size, brown body and the black wing spots for which it is named.\nTot 40-48mm, Ab 27-32mm, Hw 32-40mm.\nMales heave a powerful, aggressive flight and frequently perch on stakes overlooking the water.\nHabitat: Most still waters, preferably with well developed vegetation, and can be very numerous on acidic lakes.\nFlight Season: From late April to mid September, but most abundant in early summer.\nDistribution: Widespread and abundant in much of range, across temperate Eurasia and North America.
