The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) is one of the most widely distributed and abundant of all the birds of North America. It is also a prolific breeder. One pair can raise up to six broods of two chicks each in a single year. The bird is a strong flier with the wings making an unusual whistling sound. Mourning doves are a muted light grey and brown. The males and females look alike and are generally monogamous. Their diet consists almost exclusively of seeds. This mourning dove was photographed perched on a branch at Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA.

This is a proper pigeon, not a member of the feral gangster mobs that terrorise London's streets. Wood pigeons (Columba palumbus) are seldom seen in large groups, and their gentle cooing carries with it the essence of English country houses situated in large grounds with spreading cedar trees.

L 28-32cm, WS 60-66cm.\nBreeds in wooded areas, forest edge and larger, undisturbed parks with mature oaks and other deciduous trees which provide nest holes (commonest nest choice), locally also on rocky coasts or on buildings on ledges or in holes. Rather shy. Presence perhaps most often noted due to song.\n\nThis is a quite common Dove Species in the Netherlands, but not as common as the Wood Pigeon.
