As a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79, which buried the city under ash and preserved it, many inscriptions and statues have been preserved that document his life and work in exceptional detail. \nAn inscription in his honor above the entrance to the stage of the theater was probably placed after his death and marked the place for his chair of honor. The placement opposite the place of honor for the late consul Appius Claudius Pulcher shows the prominent position of Balbus in Herculaneum.
