Avebury is the site of the largest and oldest (2600BC) stone circle in the world, predating Stonehenge. The stone circle encloses the village of Avebury, and has two smaller circles within. Additionally, two ancient chalk paths lead to this site. Many of the stones have been lost to misguided inhabitants throughout the ages, but now the site is protected by the National Trust, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Just beyond the ring is a wide ditch, going completely around the stone circle. Whatever culture performed whatever rituals with this construction has not been agreed upon by historians.
