Leaves on a paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera) (otherwise (Morus papyrifera)) are somewhat larger than average. The top surface (shown) is usually dark green, and coarse like sandpaper. The paler under surface is soft and furry. This photograph shows one of the large leaves in its autumn colour, a bright yellow. The paper mulberry is native to eastern Asia, but is seen here in a cemetery in Surrey, England. The tree has a variety of other names, including dak, halibun, kalivon, kozo, and the tapacloth tree. The species name (papyrifera) and the common name tapacloth tree both suggest that the bark of the paper mulberry is useful in the making of paper and cloth. The bark has very strong fibres that go to make high-quality paper in (for example) Japan. In addition, the leaves and twigs are tender enough to feed to deer, lending to the paper mulberry another name - deer's tree.
