This vintage engraving from a 15th century manuscript depicts the epic battle for Jerusalem led by Charlemagne, King of Franks (742 - 814) in the Crusades of the Middle Ages. He is often regarded as the Father of Europe. Engraved by an unknown artist, it was published in an 1878 history of the Middle Ages and is now in the public domain.

The transmitter mast behind the ruins of the old Crystal Palace in Crystal Palace Park, with a threatening sky.
