The Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum) has long been an icon of the Southwest. These large lizards have a beaded texture to them and orange coloration that will catch anyone's attention. They were once thought to be 1 of only 2 venomous lizards, but new science shows that many monitors are venomous.
