Vatican, January 01 -- A blanket of fog envelops the dome of St. Peter and the monumental statues on the facade of the Basilica and on Bernini's Colonnade (left). Characterized by giant columns and pilasters, the immense facade of San Pietro (118 meters wide and 48 high), was conceived by the architect Carlo Maderno to complete Michelangelo's previous project and built between 1608 and 1614. The Basilica of St. Peter's, in the Vatican, is the center of the Catholic religion, one of the most visited places in the world and in Rome for its immense artistic and architectural treasures. A view of the stunning frescoes inside de apse of the Duomo of Spoleto, a medieval town in the Umbria region, central Italy. The frescoes, depicting the Stories of the Virgin, were painted by Filippo Lippi between 1467 and 1469. The Duomo, or Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), was built starting from 1067 in Romanesque and Lombard style and consecrated in 1198. Spoleto, one of the most visited medieval cities in Italy, hosts the Festival of the Two Worlds, a world-famous event that brings together hundreds of artists, musicians, classical dancers and opera singers every year.
