The San Francisco Peaks are the remnants of an ancient volcano that erupted millions of years ago, shattering a large mountain and leaving a large crater and surrounding peaks. The tallest of these is Humphreys at 12,637 feet and Agassiz at 12,356 feet. Contemplating the lifestyle aspects of Native Americans in the Southern Mojave Desert includes consideration their Traditional Medicine. Among the numerous medicinal uses of a plant taxonomically ranked as Larrea Tridentata was wound sanitization, and as a treatment for sore joints. They also provide protection for many animals who take shelter or dig burrows beneath their foliage, such as Desert Tortoise, Desert Wood Rat, and Desert Iguana, and Kangaroo Rat. Witness them here, two miles from the North Entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. Laws protecting the Preserve, and efforts towards conservation, appear to be the main factors affording these Pre Contact species a compete term in the locale. If we all follow their lead and act in the interest of the environment, our future generations will be able to experience this beautiful native habitat. Etymology associates the botanical epithet, Tridentata, with Three Toothed, for the look of foliage from certain angles.

Mount Elden is named for John Elden, one of the region's earliest Anglo settlers. Elden and his family established a homestead on the mountain's lower slopes and, during the late 19th century, grazed sheep on the open grasslands below the mountain. The mountain's exposed, rocky slopes are a dominant feature from almost any part of the surrounding area. Despite its rugged appearance and steep relief, the mountain is accessible via an extensive road and trail system. Mount Elden was photographed from the Forces of Nature Trail in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
