Trail along the Verde River in central Arizona
The Rio Grande River originates in the San Juan Mountains of south-central Colorado. It flows 1,896 miles through Colorado, New Mexico and Texas where it is the international border between the United States and Mexico. It eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico. In northern New Mexico the river flows 50 miles through a tectonic chasm known as the Rio Grande Gorge. In 2013 the gorge and 242,500 acres of surrounding land was designated as the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. This fall scene was photographed in the gorge south of Taos, New Mexico, USA.

river, stream, flood, effluent, ford, nulla. a large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream.
The Verde Valley is a unique, high desert ecosystem where the Colorado Plateau meets the Sonoran Desert. It is surprising to find several seasonal and perennial waterways winding through the valley. From springtime through fall, these waterways can be seen from the nearby limestone hilltops, like a vein of bright, colorful leaves from sycamore, cottonwood and willow trees. These river-dependent trees provide critical habitat and cover for local plants and wildlife. The Verde River is a significant watercourse in central Arizona. It is one of the major tributaries of the Salt River and is approximately 170 miles long. The headwaters of the Verde River are in the Prescott National Forest near Sullivan Lake. The river ends at its confluence with the Salt River near Fountain Hills. The Verde River is one of the few rivers in Arizona that flows year-round. Its flow is mainly sourced from snowmelt and springs in the upper reaches, as well as intermittent monsoon rains during the summer. The river's riparian habitat supports a rich and diverse ecosystem, making it a crucial area for wildlife and plant species. The Verde River is not only a vital water source but also a cherished natural and cultural resource in Arizona. Its scenic beauty, diverse ecosystems, and recreational opportunities make it an important part of the state's landscape and history. This view of the Verde River was photographed from the Jail Trail Riverwalk in Cottonwood, Arizona, USA.
