Paramaribo,Suriname: Arya Diwaker mandir, the Aryan Sun temple - the largest temple in Suriname of the Arya Samaj community, a monotheistic Indian Hindu reform movement that promotes values and practices based on the belief in the infallible authority of the Vedas. The Samaj was founded by the sannyasi (ascetic) Dayanand Saraswati in the 1870s and established in Suriname in 1911, when Professor Bhai Parmanand, a Vedic missionary from India, visited the West Indies. Suriname, Paramaribo: Suriname's emblem in the tympanum of the Presidential Palace - an 18th century building - the coat of arms of Suriname consists of an oval divided shield with a sailing ship at sea on the left half, and a royal palm on the earth on the right half. In the center there is a green diamond with a five-pointed star in it. The shield is flanked by two brown natives with bows and arrows, with a pennant underneath with the Latin motto 'Justitia, Pietas, Fides' (Justice, Piety, Fidelity). Pediment framed by scroll modillions.
Paramaribo, Suriname: Tzedek ve-Shalom also written as Zedek ve Shalom ('Peace and Justice') synagogue was built in 1736 for the Sephardic Jewish community. The synagogue was in use until 1999, when the remaining Jewish community merged into the Neveh Shalom Synagogue. Part of the interior was transported to Israel and is included in the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The structure is inspired by the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam (the 'Esnoga').
