Saints Peter and Paul Church façade, Grodzka, Old Town, Krakow. Krakow city in Poland was originally the capital of the country until 1956 but is now best known for its well-preserved medieval centre with its period architecture and spacious Rynek Glówny market square as well as the Jewish quarter and ghetto areas.
The statue was a gift to the Sanctyuary from the Italian King, Vittorio Emanuele II.\nThe Sanctuary has its origins in the time of iconoclasm: the Basilian monks, arriving from the East, founded a Basilina Dacia in this place, and over the centuries the devotion to the Mother of God was always dear. \nIn this same place, during the XVIII century a miracle and an apparition of the Virgin took place. The 1783 earthquake destroyed the shrine. 74 years later, another apparition of the Virgin took place and in 1858 another miracle occured: a man was healed at his legs drinking the water of a source in the place of the ancient shrine. On 8 May of the same year, the bishopric of Squillace authorized the reconstruction of the church, which was completed and consecrated on 8 September 1858.
