These were in use from 1928 until they became redundant from Monday February 15th 1971 - at which date the UK changed to decimal currency. The value of this banknote was equivalent to £0.50 in the 'new' currency. It was the smallest denomination banknote ever issued by the Bank of England.

Colchester Castle in Colchester, Essex, Eastern England, with a willow construction celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III. Colchester Castle is the largest Norman keep in Europe, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius and dating from 1076. It was constructed using Roman bricks and stone which were already locally available in large quantities. Colchester itself is known as Great Britain’s oldest recorded town and the Castle has been used variously as a military structure, a gaol and, from 1860, a museum.
