Luxembourg City skyline
Overview of the lower area of Luxembourg city. The city of Luxembourg was one of the most fortified cities in Europe from the 16th century until 1867. In 1867, the defences of the city of Luxembourg were partially demolished. Today, the remaining fortifications of the city of Luxembourg are still a good example of the military architecture of the past. The old quarters and fortifications of the city of Luxembourg were granted World Heritage status in 1994 and are listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as: City of Luxembourg: Old Quarters and Fortifications.
