An idyllic cityscape of Piazza IV Novembre, the main square in the medieval heart of Perugia, capital of Umbria, central Italy. In the center, the majestic Palazzo dei Priori (Priory Palace), considered one of the greatest examples of public palace architecture in Italy. Still today the seat of the Municipality of Perugia (Town Hall), the building was built between 1293 and 1443 and inside it preserves works and frescoes by great artists, such as Pinturicchio, the Perugino, Raffaello and Benedetto Bonfigli. Always in the center, the Fontana Maggiore (Mayor Fountain), built in 1275 as a terminal of the medieval aqueduct, is composed of two polygonal marble basins concentric decorated with bas-reliefs sculpted by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. On the right, the stairway and the side stone façade of the Duomo di San Lorenzo (Cathedral of Saint Lawrence), built in Gothic style starting from 1345 and completed in 1490 and characterized by its splendid pink marbles. Founded by the Etruscans on an ancient Umbrian settlement, Perugia is one of the most loved and visited medieval Italian cities, rich in artistic and architectural treasures that span almost three thousand years of history. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Some cherries in bloom create a suggestive and idyllic view of Piazza del Gesù, in the medieval heart of the ancient city of Viterbo, in central Italy. The medieval center of Viterbo, the largest in Europe with countless historic buildings, churches and villages, stands on the route of the ancient Via Francigena (French Route) which in medieval times connected the regions of France to Rome, up to the commercial ports of Puglia, in southern Italy, to reach the Holy Land through the Mediterranean. Located about 100 kilometers north of Rome along the current route of the Via Cassia, Viterbo is also known as the city of the Popes, because in the 13th century it was the Papal See for 24 years.
