Newspaper rock is a protected wall with ancient Anasazi Indian petroglyphs

Petroglyph of shamans (medicine men) performing a trance dance. Wildebeest Kuil is a rocky hill not far from Kimberley/Barkley West in the Northern Cape Province. At this rocky hill more than 200 petroglyphs depicting representational and abstract images can be found. The creators were people from San and Khoe origin.

Wadi Rum is a desert valley cut into the sandstone and granite cliffs in southern Jordan. Known also as the Valley of the Moon it has been inhabited since prehistoric times (witnessed by the petroglyph inscriptions) and by semi nomadic tribes since the Nabataeans but is best known for its association with T E Lawrence - Lawrence of Arabia - who based himself here to encourage the Arab Revolt and to attack Turkish Forces of the Ottoman Empire during WW1. He was later immortalized by the film of the same name, made in 1962 by David Lean. Today the only inhabitants are Bedouin tribes and transient tourists.

Pecked into the sandstone cliff, a life sized petroglyph bear with small hunters made by Native American Fremont peoples remains along the Highway 279 Rock Art site (Potash Road) in Moab, Utah.

Indigenous people have been carving in rock for thousands of years as a means of written communication. Petroglyphs are either images, designs or symbols chiseled, carved or scratched on the surface of the rock. Many of these carvings have endured over the centuries and are still visible today. The image on the right side of this rock depicts a round face. Modern natives in this area identify this as a Kachina, or spirit being. Research suggests that the Kachina Culture came to this area around 1300AD. Similar Kachina symbols are used in modern Puebloan pottery and weavings which helps make the connection from past to present. We don’t always know the true meaning of these carvings or how to interpret them. And maybe it’s not our place to try. We can however enjoy them for their artistry. These petroglyphs were photographed at Puerco Pueblo in Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook, Arizona, USA.
