Tombstone sarcophagus in Xanthos old city in Antalya Province
The ancient city of Pinara from Fethiye.
The Western Necropolis and the arcosolia in the Northern Necropolis\n\nOne of the largest of Sagalassos's\nfour necropoleis is located to the\nwest, on the skirts of the terraces on\nwhich the City was built. İt lay on and\naround a limestone massif where a\nchurch stood in the 5th or 6th century\nAD. The western necropolis covered\nmore than five hectares and contained\nmostly sarcophagi. To the north an\nalmost vertical rock face with arched\nniches (arcosolia) forms the smallest\nof Sagalassos' necropoleis, the North\nNecropolis. The arcosolia date back to\nhe Imperial period (Ist to 2nd century\nAD). Some feature a cremation um\n:arved into the rock, while in others\nseparate cremation urn would have\n)een placed in the niche. İn a third\nıroup the urn or coffin is formed by a\nseparately carved and decorated slab.\n\nKentin Taş Ocakları\nThe 'quarryscape' of Sagalassos\n\nBuilding a City out of rocks\n\nThis rock face probably began as a stone quarry,\nand later became the northern necropolis. The\nbeige-coloured local limestone was quarried\nalong the northern slopes of Sagalassos\nthroughout the Julio-Claudian to Severan\nperiods (Ist century BC-3rd century AD).\n\nBuilding stone was also brought to the site\nfrom other quarries, located anywhere from\na few to hundreds of kilometres away. White,\ndark-blue, and especially purple-veined white\nmarble from Dokimeion (Afyon); another type\nof white marble from Afrodisias (Geyre), and\neven a green marble, cipollino, from Euboia in\nGreece were brought to Sagalassos.

Xanthos is a city frequently mentioned in ancient sources and where many important events took place. Strabo describes Xanthos as the biggest Lycian city of all time. Herodotus equated the largeness of the city with Lycia in his writings. Homer talks about the heroic Lycians of the Trojan War. The name Xanthos means “yellow”. The city was called “Arnna” in the Lycian language. Xanthos was discovered by Sir Charles Fellows in 1838.
