A Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) on a perch at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area in Riverside County in southern California. Numbers of this nearly world-wide breeder fell precipitously in the 1960s from thinning of its eggshells from widespread usage of the insecticide DDT. Since the banning of that substance, this falcon has made a remarkable recovery and is now fairly common in some areas and has been removed from its endangered status. It is renowned for its aerial abilities as it preys mainly on flying birds. It has been measured in a dive at over 240 mph, making it the fastest of all birds.
