Young red deer stag standing in grassland. Young red deer stags that are newly adult find themselves at a bit of a loss during the rut. They are too young to compete with older adults for females; and too old to join bachelor herds, where the antlers of younger males are only just developing. In a couple of years his body mass will be greater and his antlers will have grown another couple of tines. Then he will be ready to give an account of himself.
