Photomicrograph of filamentous blue-green algae, Oscillatoria species. Each band along the stand is one cell. This filament is very short probably having recently parted from a longer one. Filaments are typically many times longer. This algae is mobile, it moves and twists through the water. San Francisco Bay, California, USA. Live specimen. Wet mount, 40X objective, transmitted brightfield illumination. Note - motion blur of live specimen, very shallow depth of field, chromatic aberration and uneven focus are inherent in light microscopy.

Canna, or Canna lily, is rhizomatous perennial with tropical-like foliage and large flowers that resemble iris flowers, which come in shades of red, pink, orange, yellow, brown and white colors. Dendrobium speciosum, commonly known as the rock orchid or cane orchid, is a species of Australian orchid. Its varieties can be found in a range of habitats as epiphytes (on branches or trunks of trees) or lithophytes. It has a continuous distribution along the east coast of Australia and in distinct populations along the Tropic of Capricorn.
Originally from Colombia and Guyana, this epiphyte is endangered owing to habitat destruction and poaching.

Representatives of the Lemnaceae, the duckweed family, are well-adapted for use as bioindicators for testing soil and water for toxic substances. Their rapid multiplication and the simplicity of their anatomy are important advantages for this use.

Saururus chinensis, commonly called Asian lizard’s tail, has attractive, green foliage with white splotches on the leaves at the top of the plant. It is native to wetlands, including water gardens, meadows, marshes, ditches, swampy forested areas, fields and roadsides in East Asia. Minute, spicily fragrant, white to yellowish-white flowers bloom in early to mid-summer (June-August). Each flower spike resembles the tail of a lizard, hence the common name.
