This half crown was minted in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year, 1887, celebrating her 50 years on the throne. This photo shows the obverse / front of the coin, bearing the portrait referred to as 'the Victoria Jubilee head'. Silver coins of this time were made of stering silver, with a purity of 0.925. The half crown represented one-eighth of a pound, 30 pennies, which is 12.5p in today's decimalised currency. However, because of its silver content, the coin is now worth a number of times its face value. The obverse bears the words VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, Victoria by the grace of God. It wasn't until much later that half crowns included the words 'half crown' in their descriptions.
