The diamond-ring effect occurs at the beginning and end of totality during a total solar eclipse. As the last bits of sunlight pass through the valleys on the moon's limb, and the faint corona around the sun is just becoming visible, it looks like a ring with glittering diamonds on it.

During a solar eclipse, totality occurs when the moon passes directly between the earth and the sun, and for a brief period, blocks much of the bright light from the sun. Then the outer edges of the corona become visible. The corona, the outermost part of the sun’s atmosphere, is usually invisible to us from earth because the light on the surface of the sun is so bright. Even during totality, viewing requires glasses with special filters to protect the eyes.
