New Mexico has some of the flattest land as well as some of the most rugged mountains in the country. Some portions of the state are rich in pine forests, meadows, and fish-laden mountain streams, while other areas are devoid of any water bodies, and even cacti struggle to survive.

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are the southernmost part of the Rocky Mountains in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.  This mountain range is 242 miles in length and contains several peaks which are over 12,000 feet above sea level in New Mexico and over 14,000 feet in Colorado.  The highest peak is Blanca Peak in Colorado at 14,351 feet above sea level.  The name of the mountains, which means “Blood of Christ” in Spanish, refers to the reddish color observed during sunrise and sunset.  This view of Cuchillo del Medio and Lucero Peaks in the Sangre de Cristo range was photographed in the Fall from Arroyo Seco near Taos, New Mexico, USA.
