The beautiful fresco painted by Giotto depicting Saint Francis talking to birds inside the Basilica Superiore di San Francesco (Upper Basilica of Saint Francis), in the medieval heart of Assisi, in Umbria. Giotto painted a series of great frescoes along the walls of the single nave of the Basilica between 1292 and 1305, depicting the Stories of St. Francis, from his vocation to his death. Built in the Italian Gothic style starting from 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica preserves the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor since 1230. The construction of the Basilica consists of a Lower Basilica and an Upper Basilica, perfectly integrated. Over the centuries Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity between peoples and between the different confessions of the world. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Since 2000 the Basilica and other Franciscan sites of Assisi have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition format.
St Peter Healing the Sick with His Shadow, by Masaccio, famous Early Renaissance Fresco in the Brancacci Chapel in Florence, Italy
Fresco from Pompei, Casa di Venus, 1st century AD. Dug out in 1960. It is supposed that this fresco could be the Roman copy of famous portrait of Campaspe, mistress of Alexander the Great\nThe Venus Anadyomene ( Venus rising from the sea ) is considered one of Apelles’s masterpieces. Although the original is lost, we can imagine it somewhat similar to the Roman Venus o. Venus or Aphrodite (the Greek equivalent) was the Goddess of beauty and love. Her birth took place near Cyprus when she rose out of the calm sea. This moment was that Apelles chose to depict. It is said that for this painting he used Campaspe or Phryne as his model. The latter was another courtesan famous for her beauty. According to Athenaeus, Apelles was inspired to draw Venus’s birth when he saw Phryne swimming naked. The painting eventually ended up in the temple of Caesar in Rome, where, according to Pliny, it sustained minor damaged. Eventually Nero had it removed and replaced with another painting. After the success of the first Venus, Apelles decided to create an even better one. Unfortunately, he passed away before finishing it.

Pyramus and Thisbe are a pair of legendary, ill-fated lovers from Babylon whose story forms part of Ovid's Metamorphoses. House of Loreius Tiburtinus, Pompeii.\n\nPyramus and Thisbe's parents, driven by rivalry, forbade their union, but they communicated through a crack in the wall between their houses. They planned to meet under a mulberry tree, but a series of tragic misunderstandings led to their deaths: Thisbe fled from a lioness, leaving her cloak behind, which Pyramus found and mistook as evidence of her death. Believing Thisbe was killed by the lioness, Pyramus committed suicide, staining the mulberry fruits with his blood. Thisbe, upon finding Pyramus dead, also killed herself. The gods changed the color of the mulberry fruits to honor their forbidden love.
