The footbridge, La Passerelle Seguin, when built in 1825, was the first wire-cable suspension bridge in Europe. Today it is for the use of pedestrians and cyclists only to cross the Rhone river between the renown winemaking town of Tain L'Hermitage in the Drome region and Tournon-sur-Rhône in the Ardeche region. The bridge was designed by Marc Seguin, the French inventor of the wire-cable suspension bridge. When built it was the first suspension bridge of it's type across the River Rhone and was the first in Europe It links Tournon-sur-Rhône to Tain-l'Hermitage in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, region of France. Marc Seguin with the help of his brothers would eventually erect over 180 suspension bridges across France.

The famous vineyard, terraced, Hermitage Hill stands behind the town of Tain L'Hermitage in the Northern Rhone Wine Region of Cotes du Rhone, south of Lyon. The hill is seen by some as the spiritual home of the Syrah grape variety. The famous wine region of Crozes-Hermitage encompasses 11 communes in the Drôme region on the left bank of the Rhône, to the north, south and east of the town of Tain-lHermitage. The vines grow on the south west side of a steep granite hill facing the afternoon sun. With approximately 345 acres of vines, with a terroir stony, soil composed mostly of granite and gravels is responsible for Hermitage producing 730,000 bottles of mostly red wines, annually. At the top of the hill, the Chapelle Saint-Christophe can be seen, a small chapel where it is said that a hermit once lived - leading to the origins of the Hermitage nomenclature. The footbridge, La Passerelle Seguin, was designed by Marc-Seguin and was the first suspension bridge of it's type across the River Rhone.
