The Apache National Forest and the Sitgreaves National Forest encompass over two million acres of Arizona and western New Mexico.  They are administered as one national forest.  The Sitgreaves National Forest was named for Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves, a topographical engineer who conducted the first government expedition across Arizona in the early 1850’s. The Apache National Forest was named for the native tribes that lived in the area.
