Bryce Canyon National Park is a collection of natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Its rim at varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet. The Bryce Amphitheater is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and 800 feet deep. The Paiute Indians believed that the hoodoos (pinnacles) were people whom the gods turned to stone. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who was sent here by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He settled in this area in 1874. Rhyolite is a type of extrusive igneous rock characterised by its light color, high silica content, and fine-grained texture. It forms from the rapid cooling of magma on the Earth's surface and is often associated with volcanic eruptions. Rhyolite is rich in silica (SiO₂), typically containing more than 70% silica. It is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar, with minerals like biotite, hornblende, and pumice often present.
