Xanthos is a city frequently mentioned in ancient sources and where many important events took place. Strabo describes Xanthos as the biggest Lycian city of all time. Herodotus equated the largeness of the city with Lycia in his writings. Homer talks about the heroic Lycians of the Trojan War. The name Xanthos means “yellow”. The city was called “Arnna” in the Lycian language. Xanthos was discovered by Sir Charles Fellows in 1838.
