At left the famous Pantheon colonnade, one of the best preserved Roman structures in the Eternal City. The Pantheon was built in 27 b.C. by the Consul Marco Vispanio Agrippa for the emperor Augustus and dedicated to all Roman gods. Currently the Pantheon it is home to a Catholic church and inside there are the tombs of some Italian kings and the remains of the great Renaissance artist Raffaello Sanzio (Raphael). The fountain in the center of the square with an original Egyptian obelisk was built by the sculptor Leonardo Sormani in 1575 to a design by the architect Giacomo della Porta. Rome, Italy, November 01 -- A suggestive night scene of the Fontana delle Naiadi (Fountain of the Naiads) in the center of Piazza della Repubblica (Republic Square), in the historic heart of Rome. The Fountain of the Naiads was built in 1870 during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX, a few days before the conquest of Rome by the troops of the Kingdom of Italy and the end of the temporal power of the papacy. The porticoed buildings that surround the square were built between 1887 and 1898 by the architect Gaetano Koch. Piazza della Repubblica is located in the area of the Baths of Diocletian, the most impressive spa area of ancient Rome, and the central Via Nazionale boulevard. This area of the city is also famous for the presence of numerous luxury hotels and high fashion shops. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
