Chichén Itzá is the largest of the archaeological cities of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It was granted World Heritage Site status in 1988 by UNESCO World Heritage Site and was recently selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The Pyramid of Kukulcan is the most famous landmark of Chichen Itza. This was a temple-pyramid dedicated to the Feathered Serpent God, Kukulcan. Sculptures of the Feathered Serpents run down the sides of the northern staircase, and are set off by shadows from the corner tiers on the Spring and Fall equinox
Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities, and today is visited for thousand of tourists every day. It is one of New7Wonders of the World.
The Temple of the Cross pyramid, in the foreground, is one of the biggest known structures of the ancient Maya City of Palenque, located in Mexico's southern state of Chiapas. After its abandonment, it was slowly absorbed into the jungle, before being rediscovered hundreds of years later.\nDespite extensive excavations in the past decades, archeologist estimate that less than 10% of the site has been explored so far, and that over a thousand buildings are still buried.
