Daphne odora (winter daphne) is a species of flowering plant in the family Thymelaeaceae and is native to China. It is sometimes called Spurge olive, but this name is shared by other plants. It is an evergreen shrub with fragrant, fleshy, pale-pink, tubular flowers. D. odora 'Aureomarginata' has yellow edged leaves, and is hardier and more suitable to cultivation. Sheep's sorrel Rumex acetosella on an ant hill. These red or maroon flowers make a pleasant splash of colour amidst the green of short acid grassland (here, on Mitcham Common in Surrey, England). Originating in Eurasia, sheep's sorrel is now a common weed in North America. It favours moist, acidic soil, thriving on floodplains and near marshes – a fair description of its location in this photograph.
