Wide angle view of the famous Painted Wall of Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado. This Canyon displays some of the steepest cliffs and oldest rocks in North America. The Gunnison River (in a shadow of the  bottom), with two million years of erosion work, has sculpted this vertical wilderness in hard, dark-colored Precambrian gneiss, which had been later crosscut with light pegmatite dikes.

As of 2011, the Petroglyph Museum functions in the reserve.
