Île Sainte-Marguerite is the larger of the two Lérins Islands, opposite Cannes. It served as a prison for the famous man in the iron mask. After the revocation of the Edict of Nante, the fort on the island of Sainte-Marguerite was one of the four places of imprisonment of the Huguenots with the tower of Constance, the Fort of Brescou and the castle of If. In the nineteenth century, the island was a place of detention for Maghreb prisoners deported from Algeria.\nIt is separated from the Cap de la Croisette, in the commune of Cannes, by a shallow strait 1,300 m wide. It extends from west to east over a length of 3.2 km, and its maximum width is about 900 m. There are beautiful eucalyptus woods, the oldest in Europe, and pines. The majority of the island is covered by forest.
