Yellowstone
Stoneman Lake is a small, natural lake located in the Coconino National Forest of Northern Arizona. Situated just south of the Mogollon Rim, it is within the transition zone between the plateau and the surrounding lowlands. The lake lies in a depression formed from volcanic activity over 8 million years ago. It is situated at 6770 feet above sea level and is surrounded by ponderosa pine forests and rolling hills. The lake has a surface area of about 80 acres. Because it is primarily fed by seasonal rainwater runoff and snowmelt from surrounding hills, the lake's water level can vary significantly from year to year. In this photograph, Stoneman Lake has abundant water from winter’s snowmelt.
Yellowstone National Park sits on top of a dormant volcano and is home to more geysers and hot springs than any other place on earth. Wonders abound at this truly unique national park, from sites like the Yellowstone Grand Canyon to wildlife like America's largest buffalo herd, grizzly bears, and wolves.
