The castle is recognized around the world and is one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands. The castle history is quite dramatic; it was partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719 and lay in ruins for about 200 years. It was then restored to its former glory by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap, with the restoration completed in 1932

Lews Castle is a Victorian-era castle located west of the town of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. It was built in the years 1844–51 as a country house for Sir James Matheson who had bought the whole island a few years previously with his fortune from the Chinese Opium trade.
