This 9th century Buddhist temple was abandoned and largely forgotten for hundreds of years until it was found again by Sir Thomas Raffles in 1814. Today the temple is still used annually for a Buddhist pilgrimage and is the most visited tourist attraction in Indonesia.

This temple, marking the centre of the old city of Si Satchanalai, has elephants surrounding a bell-shaped chedi (stupa) that is somewhat better preserved than its counterpart in Sukhothai. An inscription states that the temple was built by King Ramkhamhaeng between 1285 and 1291.
