William Marshal (1146-1219), the 1st Earl of Pembroke was an advisor to King Henry II, King Richard ‘the Lionheart’ and King John whilst the latter was Regent during the childhood of King Henry III. He has been described as ‘the greatest knight who ever lived’. His sons, William, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (1190-1231) and Gilbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke (1194-1241) lie near him.

It was established in 1966, when the area was declared a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the prehistoric rock carvings, mud volcanoes and musical stones in the region.\n\nGobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve acquired national status in 2006, and Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. As of 2011, the Petroglyph Museum functions in the reserve.
