Castelo de São Jorge - St. George's Castle - is a Moorish castle and fortress on one of the highest points in Lisbon, Portugal. Archeological excavations on the site shows remains all the way back to the 6th century BC. The first fortress dates back to 48 BC during roman rule. In the 10th century Muslim Berber forces rebuilt the fortress including the outer walls and towers that still exist. In 1147 Lisbon was reconquered by the a Christian Portuguese army under command of Afonso Henriques with the help of crusaders from northern Europe. In the 14th century withstood several attacks from Castile forces. In late 14th century King João I (John I), who married an english princess dedicated the castle to the warrior-saint George - thus the name of the castle.
