A Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) hopping from the water at the Salton Sea, Riverside County, Southern California.  This bird has an enormous range, particularly if it is considered conspecific with the Black-winged Stilt (H. himantopus) of the Old World and Australia. In North America, it breeds as far north as the central United States.

Measures 38 centimeters long. Adults have long pink legs, a long black beak and an extensive white stripe that extends across the lower abdomen, neck and part of the head, which has a black upper part, as well as the nape and back. The legs alone measure around 16 cm and, when the bird flies, they are arranged longitudinally in relation to the body. It has habits and behaviors similar to those of the white-backed stilt (Himantopus melanurus), from which it differs in its black back.\nAccording to Hayman et al. (1986), is a species that presents sexual dimorphism. The adult male has a uniform black mantle and wings. The adult female has a brownish mantle and back, contrasting with the black of her neck.
