The magnificent frescoes of the Mazzatosta Chapel, inside the Church of Santa Maria della Verità, in the heart of the medieval city of Viterbo, in central Italy. Painted in the middle of the Renaissance period by the artist Lorenzo da Viterbo, this cycle of frescoes is considered one of the most important works of art in Tuscia. The frescoes, largely preserved and restored, represent the life of the Virgin Mary, with the Annunciation, the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, the Marriage of the Virgin, the Adoration of the Child and the Assumption. The decoration of the chapel was commissioned to the artist in 1469 by the nobleman Nando Mazzatosta. The medieval center of Viterbo, the largest in Europe with countless historic buildings, churches and villages, stands on the route of the ancient Via Francigena (French Route) which in medieval times connected the regions of France to Rome, up to the commercial ports of Puglia, in southern Italy, to reach the Holy Land through the Mediterranean.
